Abstract:
The European Commission sponsored and published in 2000 (Radiation Protection Series N. 119) a multimedia course on Radiation Protection Training in Interventional Radiology (MARTIR programme) containing basic and advanced topics of radiation protection and quality assurance. The course, available in an interactive CD-rom, contains 80 lessons organized in 5 chapters; videos, images and slide presentations with free access for users. It can be used as a bibliographic tool for topics of interest or to follow a tailored training programme as a homework monitored course. Monitoring includes all the student information, visited lessons and time used in each session. These data are stored in an encrypted file. In this modality residents and fellows must pass a short evaluation consisting of multiple choice questions (randomly assorted from a question bank at each run) after each chapter to continue with the next one and to perform a final examination at the end of the course. Software automatically emits a certification with the total time dedicated to the training programme and the obtained score. The experience for three years using the CD-rom for medical physicists, for medicine pre- and post-graduated students and for X-ray technicians is presented.
