Abstract:
The existence of a radiation protection officer (Qualified Expert) is a requirement in Germany to retrieve an official authorization to handle radioactive materials or to operate an X-ray facility. To acquire the qualification of “Qualified Expert” is in Germany tied to the proof of professional qualification, by a well defined period of practical work in the field of application, and by successful participation in a training course on radiation protection. The topic of the courses and the temporal extent are given in the guidelines. The courses of each training center have to be acknowledged by the responsible state authority. The authorization on radiation protection to be Qualified Expert is valid for five years. To keep this it is required by law to take part in courses for update. Our training center, the LPS, is providing the training for about 2500 people each year. One third of the participants participate in courses for update. I would like to present the content of these courses and our experience with them.
