Abstract:
IAEA  prepared  a  “Strategic  Approach  to  Education  and  Training  in  Radiation  and  Waste  Safety”  (Strategy  on  Education  and  Training)  aiming  at  establishing,  by  2010,  sustainable  education  and  training  programmes  in  Member  States,  which  was  endorsed  by  the  GC(45)/RES/10C  in  2001.  The  strategy  is  implemented  through,  preparation  of  standardized  training  packages  for  practice  specific  training  events  and  for  long  duration  education  courses.  These  are  disseminated  to  the  training  centers  and  to  the  Member  States  on  request.  The  training  packages  are  validated  by  the  Steering  Committee  on  Education  and  Training  in  Radiation  Protection  and  Waste  Safety.  This  committee  representing  regional  training  centres,  collaborating  training  centers,  international  organisations,  advices  the  Agency’s  long  term  action  plan  and  oversees  the  implementation  of  the  strategy.  Train  the  Trainers  workshops  are  organized  to  train  the  potential  lecturers  on  communication  skill  and  on  the  use  IAEA  developed  training  material  .An  Inter  Centre  Network  between  the  Agency  and  regional,  collaborating  national  training  centres  is  established  to  facilitate  information  exchange.  A  standard  syllabus  for  Radiation  protection  Officer  training  is  developed.  Efforts  are  underway  to  establish  Elearning  based  on  the  successful  implementation  of  the  distance  learning  project  in  radiation  protection.  Practice  specific  training  events  and  postgraduate  educational  courses  are  conducted  periodically  to  build  competence  .  These  activities  are  aimed  at  assisting  Member  States  attain  self  sustainability.
