Abstract:
To generate safe, cost-effective power in tune with market needs, EDF has set itself the goal of aligning the level of radiation protection requirements with that of nuclear safety, that is making it a constantly progressing priority area.
The increasingly demanding expectations of public opinion, and EDF Group’s commitment to sustainable development as well as its responsibility as nuclear operator, mean that we have to be still more rigorous and set an ever better example. Supplying safe, clean energy is therefore our duty, both to our customers and the public and to EDF and contractor staff who work at our plants every day.
Ever since the French fleet of nuclear power plants was commissioned, radiation protection has been a central concern. This gave excellent results, with average individual doses being halved in 10 years.
With over 1,200 reactor years’ experience and a series of rules and procedures, expectations were clarified and all that was missing was this written guide, the radiation protection guide.
It is a 270 page book which explains the basics, radiological risks and protective measures. It also deals with the biological effects of radiation.
The guide has been given out to 40,000 nuclear power plant workers and can be dipped into or used to support radiation protection culture and help attain EDF’s challenging dose objectives.
