Description |

The extensive use of radioactive materials in industry, research and medicine implies a risk of nuclear and radiological incidents and accidents. The same goes for their production, conditioning and transport as well as for their processing after use and their possible storage as waste.
As many other countries, Belgium has adopted a nuclear and radiological emergency plan that is intended to offer a framework for effective response in case such an event would happen.
The prerequisite of success in applying such a plan is that all organisations involved have precise knowledge of what is and what can be expected of them and that all members of their personnel involved have been given adequate education and training. Emergency preparedness also calls for information of the public at large and of different target groups within the population who would have to react in an appropriate way.
This paper discusses the information, education and training efforts undertaken in Belgium during recent years and also deals with perspectives for the near future.
