All available places for the technical tours have been taken. It is currently not possible anymore to register for the technical tours.
Visit the SCK•CEN at Mol
The technical visit will take place on Wednesday, 16th February 2011. Departure with the busses from the conference venue, Thon Hotel at 8.30 am.
"Studiecentrum voor Kernenergie - Centre d’étude de l’énergie nucléaire"
PIME delegates can choose between the four following installations:
-
Hades – the underground laboratory
The underground laboratory HADES is the most important research infrastructure in Belgium for experimental research on the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. In 1980, the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre, SCK•CEN, started the construction of the underground laboratory. HADES is situated in Boom clay at a depth of 224 meters and was extended in different phases: recently, the construction of a second access shaft (1997-1999) and the building of the connexion gallery (2001-2002) were completed
The visit will end at 5 pm in front of the conference hotel.
Visit of the European Parliament (EP)
The visit will take place on 16th February 2011 from 10:00 to 12:00. The participants need to be at the visitors’ entrance 15 minutes before the start of the visit, so the bus will leave from the Thon hotel at 9:15.
The EP is one of the main European Union (EU) institutions and it is the only one that is directly elected by EU citizens. In addition, it has gained even more power since the entry into force of the Lisbon treaty: www.europarl.europa.eu.
The visit will give PIME delegates the opportunity to learn more about how the EU institutions and the EP in particular work. It will include a general presentation from an EU official on the role and work of the EP, as well as a more specialized one on the work of the EP Committee responsible for energy matters (ITRE Committee). The group will then be able to visit the debating chamber of the EP.
The visit will end at around 12:00 and the bus should be back at the hotel at around 12:30.
The deadline for registering for the “technical tour” of the European Parliament is 31 January!
