Deuterium
scroll
Hydrogen isotope with a nucleus containing a neutron
and a proton resulting in double the weight of the nucleus of normal
hydrogen, which contains only one proton. It is therefore known as “heavy“
hydrogen. Deuterium occurs naturally. There is one deuterium atom per
6,500 “normal“ hydrogen atoms. (See 'Heavy
water')
