Salamanca offers an amazing number of sights
within walking distance: two old and grand universities,
two cathedrals, numerous palaces, mansions, convents,
and historical squares, all built in the same local,
golden-brown stone. The architectural purity of the
historical city centre is remarkable. Everyday life
centres around the magnificent Plaza Mayor, the main
square, which is just celebrating its 250th
anniversary. It is one of the most beautiful squares
in Spain. It is small wonder that UNESCO has included
Salamanca in its World Heritage Sites. The city was
also European Cultural Capital in 2002.
Salamanca however has more to offer than
monuments alone. Its small streets are bustling with
life, the university students add a youthful touch,
the shopping opportunities are excellent, the restaurants
offer exquisite gastronomy, and night birds will not
                            be disappointed either.
The area around Salamanca offers visitors
many opportunities for day trips to picturesque rural
                            villages and exceptional landscapes.
