Conference venue
Salamanca, The Golden
City
The visitor will easily fall in love with the beauty
of Salamanca’s ancient golden-brown stones.
Salamanca offers an amazing number of sights
within walking distance: two old and grand universities,
two cathedrals, numerous palaces, mansions, convents,
and historical squares, all built in the same local,
golden-brown stone. The architectural purity of the
historical city centre is remarkable. Everyday life
centres around the magnificent Plaza Mayor, the main
square, which is just celebrating its 250th
anniversary. It is one of the most beautiful squares
in Spain. It is small wonder that UNESCO has included
Salamanca in its World Heritage Sites. The city was
also European Cultural Capital in 2002.
Salamanca however has more to offer than
monuments alone. Its small streets are bustling with
life, the university students add a youthful touch,
the shopping opportunities are excellent, the restaurants
offer exquisite gastronomy, and night birds will not
be disappointed either.
The area around Salamanca offers visitors
many opportunities for day trips to picturesque rural
villages and exceptional landscapes.

Access
As Salamanca does not have an international
airport, the TopFuel participants are recommended
to fly to Madrid (212 km to the south-east of Salamanca)
or Valladolid (115 km to the north-west). Both cities
are connected to Salamanca by regular, comfortable
intercity trains. From Madrid, the travel time is
two hours and fifteen minutes; from Valladolid, one
and a half hour. For information on train time tables
and prices, please see the website of the Spanish
railways (RENFE) at horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html.
Conference and Exhibition Centre
of Castilla and Leon
TopFuel 2006 will
be held at the Conference and Exhibition Centre
of Castilla and León, located in Salamanca’s

(off Plaza San Bartolome). The conference
centre is within walking distance of the conference
hotels and the social event venues (except
for the golf tournament on Sunday 22 October
2006). The tourist sights, including the famous
