Decay time
scroll
The radioactive fission products in the fuel resulting
from nuclear fission are the reason for the high initial radiation intensity
and the heat generation of the fuel after its use in the reactor. Heat
rate and activity of the irradiated fuel initially decrease rapidly
due to the large share of short-lived radionuclides. The activity contained
in irradiated fuel decreases to approx. 1/100 of the original value
within one year of removal from the reactor.
