The Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant with two pressurized water reactors is located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA. On 28th March 1979, a serious accident with partial core meltdown occurred in unit 2. The fission products were almost completely retained in the reactor pressure vessel and in the containment. Since the retention function of the containment functioned as designed, only xenon-133 and very small proportions of I-131 were released into the environment, resulting in a calculated maximum dose of 0.85 mSv.
