Chemical base material which cannot be chemically converted
into simpler substances. Examples: oxygen, aluminium, iron, mercury,
lead, uranium. At present 118 different elements are known, some of
which do not occur in nature and were artificially generated: technetium,
promethium and all elements with a higher atomic number than that of
uranium.
