Post-conference Technical Visit

Technical tours within the scope of the Helmholtz Association and the research centre GKSS

Technical visit 1: FRG-1 reactor at the research centre GKSS Geesthacht
Co-ordinator: Mr. P. Schreiner

The development, construction and operation of the neutron scattering facilities at FRG-1 are essential elements of the GKSS research programmes “Research with Photons, Neutrons and Ions” and “Advanced Engineering Materials”. This integration ensures that research using neutrons at GKSS is oriented less towards methodology and more towards research goals in the area of materials development customised to industrial applications.

FRG-1 is a research reactor with a thermal power of five megawatts. It is designed as a beam tube reactor implying that the neutrons created by nuclear fission are transported to the research locations via beam tubes.

FRG-1 became operational in 1958. Since then it has been continually updated to incorporate the latest scientific and technological developments. It is today one of the most modern sources of neutrons in Europe.

Technical visit 2: Visit of the HASYLAB research centre for science with photons at Deutsches Elektronen-SYnchrotron (DESY)
Co-ordinator:Dr. T. Lippmann

Experimental stations

Since the end of 2002, GKSS has been responsible for running the user mode micro tomography at the synchrotron radiation measuring stations at DESY. The first series of micro tomography investigations were successfully carried out at the new high-energy beam line HARWI II.

HARWI II beam line is dedicated to texture, strain and imaging measurements for material science. Its outstanding characteristics are the use of high energy X-rays fro 20-250 keV that can deeply penetrate materials.

Both technical tours will take place on Wednesday, 5 March 2008 in the afternoon.

Preliminary agenda:

13:00 Departure from Sofitel hotel
14:00 Welcome and start of visit
16:30 End of visit
18:00 Back at the Sofitel hotel

Registration

The two technical tours are included in the registration fee.

The maximum size of each group is limited and participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
