21 -25 March 2010, Marrakech, Morocco

Venue

Marrakech (مراكش marrākish), known as the "Pearl of the South," is a city in southwestern Morocco in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Founded almost 1,000 years ago, its 16 km of mid-brick ramparts remain as the evidence of its past as a former imperial city in Morocco.

La Koutoubia Mosque Marrakech

Like many North African cities, Marrakech has two main divisions: the médina and the modern city. The medina is a colourful oasis with the busiest square in the entirety of Africa, called Djemaa el Fna. At this famous place there is always something to see day and night whether it be snake charmers, acrobats, sooth-sayers, or the musicians and food stalls.  It is surrounded by endless labyrinths of souks (bazaars) and alley ways covering all of the Medina. Those traditional North African markets service the common daily needs of the people of the city and contain everything that a traveller could want: colour, atmosphere and smells, welcoming and smiling faces.

Marrakesh has a wide range of sites and curiosities to offer. One of them is the splendid minaret of the Koutoubia mosque. This 12th century Hispano-Moorish masterpiece inspired the builders of the Giralda in Seville. Amateurs of the eternal Orient will want to visit the splendid Bahia Palace where surprising Andalusian gardens add to the refinement of the prestigious apartments and their secret patios. They will find an overload of Zelij (Morrocan tiles) and some beautiful decoration in the Saadian Tombs which were not discovered until the beginning of the 20th century.

The Majorelle Gardens provide an excellent respite from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. The park boasts a collection of plants from across the globe exposed in an enchanting framework. It shelters today the magnificent art collection Islamic of Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent.

RRFM Delegates will enjoy Marrakech in spring when bright blue skies offset the rose-hue of the city's clay buildings and temperatures are comfortable.
