University level first stage:
University level first cycle study programmes according to the Bologna process: The first cycle has a binary structure and offers two types of study programmes: university (academically-oriented) and professional programmes (more practical oriented leading to employment in the industry). Duration of the first cycle programmes is determined by years of study (three to four years) and credit points (180 to 240 CP). Officially, they last for three to four years, which, including the absolventsko leto makes a total of four or five years. Programmes include practical training and lead to the diploma examination. Students can enter the labour market or continue their studies at the post-graduate level and obtain a specialist degree (Specializacija) or in certain cases a Magisterij (Master).

New study programmes according to the Bologna process will be enrolled from academic year 2009/2010 on. Students, who enrolled in higher education before introduction of new study programmes, end their study under conditions, valid before the Higher Education Act was put into effect, but at the farthest till academic year 2015/2016. Exsistent study programmes are Specialist, Master and Ph. D.
SPECIALIST STUDY
Specialist study is orientated in acquisition of specialized knowledge from a certain study field. Specialist study lasts 1–2 years. Candidates with an appropriate professionally orientated or academic degree and who fulfill conditions, set by a study programme, can join a specialist study.
MASTERS STUDY
A Masters study is scientific research orientated. It includes an introduction in research work, development of candidate’s ability for performing research in certain scientific discipline and study of subjects to deepen and broaden the knowledge required for preparing a Master’s thesis. A Masters study lasts 2 years.
UNIFORM PH. D. STUDY
An uniform Ph. D. study lasts 4 years. Candidates with an appropriate academic degree and who fulfill conditions, set by a study programme, can join a uniform Ph. D. study. It is possible to change from a Masters Study programme without a Master’s thesis, if the student reaches the required level of efficiency, set for that change by the study programme.
PH. D. STUDY
A Ph. D. study lasts 2 years. A candidate who graduated from a Masters study programme and fulfills other conditions, set by Ph. D. study, can request an approval of a Ph. D dissertation.
